Real weight per area, measured on a cutting. The 16 oz vs 18 oz dispute is settled by a scale, not by the label.
Flat dimensions plus drop, measured. A short drop leaves the bottom of the load exposed.
Hardware count against the order. Published reference for scale: a 16x27 steel tarp listed by a US retailer carries 76 D-rings and 46 grommets.
Grommet and D-ring pull test. Practitioners report grommets and D-rings tearing out as the most common failure.
Finished-product weighing as a fast proxy. Published reference: a 20x27 lumber tarp in 18 oz weighs 94 lbs (43 kg). A finished tarp far under the published weight was not cut from the fabric on the order.

High-frequency welded seams for watertightness; hardware sewn on webbing, never on bare fabric.
